I know NOTHING **UPDATE**

Mon Feb 23, 2009, 6:37 AM
  • Mood: Artistic
  • Listening to: Pirates of the Caribbean
  • Watching: my computer screen
  • Eating: cookies
  • Drinking: Diet Dr. Pepper
I've been having one of those moods where it feels like I know absolutely nothing about painting. I've never had formal training - everything I do is self taught - and today I really feel it. I'd love to go to school, even if it was online, to finally learn things from the basics up. Some days it seems my trial and error way of doing things is a complete waste of time. I understand that practice is the key to improving, and I'm fully committed to continuing to hone my abilities for the rest of my life, but some guidance would be so much appreciated.

On a good note, we are getting a large tax return this year and will be able to pay off several large bills (medical bills and some student loans that are lurking around from forever ago). I'm really excited to be able to get on better financial footing.

**UPDATE**
Thanks a bunch for the helpful advice and support. :) I went on this weekend and painted despite my temporary feelings of inadequacy ;P I'm happy with the results which you can see as the 3rd WIP below. I'm nowhere near finished, but I'm at a happier place about the whole thing.

My newest artwork progress:

Your work is beautiful.i surely know how you feel as I have only beem doing this for a short time. I have found some books I am going to order to see if they help. I love your art. Hang in there sweetie. Practice makes perfect. Hugs...Pam

And in the end, it's not the years in your life that count. It's the life in your years.
:icondarkmaidenofsorrow:
Thank you. :) What books are you ordering, if you don't mind my asking?

Trial and error is the only way..it leads to innovation through common sense ....it leads to new visions of originality...It leads to bucks ..
Just keep plugging away :)

Er...common sense? :omg: Not sure I have much of that.

I like that line though - Innovation Through Common Sense - sounds like a great motto :boogie:

I wish I had wisdom to share, but I don't even have any for me! That sort of sounds like how I feel all the time, so the best I can say is to point out that a lot of the classes are probably about the same way you've taught yourself, but just codified and printed. That and your work always looks pretty damn professional to an outsider :D Sorry, cold comfort is the best I can offer most days ;)

I wouldn't call that cold comfort. Thank you for such kind comments.

I just get frustrated with myself, I think. I feel like I should be further along than where I am right now.

I've had formal training in art, some of it was useful, some not so, it really depends on your teachers. Really all I learnt was practice, practice .... and never stop until the day you die and as for the experiment, trial and error it's the best way to ever learn anything.

I'm sorry I'm not much help at the moment the heat's fried my brain.
