Thoughts on my recent dA experiences.

I've noticed with my recent browsing habits that I've come across a lot of artwork that looks like it has been done, redone, and done again. I'm not sure if this is because I look at soooo much artwork in a day that I'm bound to come across similar themes or because people tend to stick to their comfort zones and are satisfied with that. It made me curious to know if others value originality in their dA browsing habits. Do certain artworks lose their interest for you because there have been so many others like it? Are you one who values similar artworks because that's just the kind of artwork you like? How much is originality a factor in what you comment on and favorite here at dA? I'm curious to know, so I made a poll. Feel free to comment here or there. :)

family I'm (happily) married with 3 young kids, the oldest just on the verge of teenagerhood . I see myself as a good parent, though probably not a typical one. I think they are all great kids, and I see them having happier and more successful lives than I've had so far. At least, that's one of my biggest hopes. My husband isn't much into the art scene, but he appreciates and supports my efforts, and that's all I can ask.

daily living I live in a craptastic little house in rural Kansas with way too many cats (9 at last count, though we feed some strays outside as well as a possum or 2). I work from home typing up medical documents for a living. It's pretty boring work, though it plays to my strengths - whizz at English, not having to drive to work, and not having to deal with typical office politics.

art I have a hard time describing myself as an artist. Maybe that is just an intrinsic lack of faith in my own abilities, that taking on the mantle of artist has some skill level requirement. However, I do love to create, most often in Photoshop, either photo manipulation or painting. I sometimes create in words, though in recent years that has gone by the wayside. I need a quiet environment for writing, and I just never seem to have it. I also do take photos, though these days it is usually just as a way to collect images for photo manipulations or references for painting. I sketch with paper and pencil too, though only to scan in and paint.

quirks I almost never drive, as I find it a terrifying experience. I do have a license for short trips to the local store and for emergencies. To me, one car looks just about the same as any other car (which horrifies my husband). I get lost just walking out my front door. Okay, maybe I do have to go a few streets over to get lost, but it is not far from the truth. I've had frequent vivid nightmares since I was a child. I've occasionally written them down and used them for story ideas, but something keeps me from bringing those nightmares to my visual art. I have a general dislike for socializing in real life and prefer to spend my time either alone or with my immediate family (and with the cats, of course). I'm happiest when I'm home at my computer in the throes of creativity...or reading in bed...or making cookies.

Thanks for the fave. How did you get into working at home? I'm currently a store manager at Blockbuster and while I love my customers and my employees, I hate my job. But, the biggest problem is that it is physically painful to stand at my job (I'm not fat, but my veins are giving out and my legs ache and hurt all the time). I really want to find something where I can sit on the floor or have my legs up, yet I still need to make the same kind of pay as I get now.

She was a phantom of delight...a spirit, yet a woman too!
When my daughter was two my husband was pushing me to get a job, but I didn't want to leave her with a baby-sitter all day, so I started researching what I could do from home. I came across information about medical transcription and found a school in my area to teach me. I went to school for a year, and I started working before I even graduated because my own doctor needed a transcriptionist. The industry has changed over the 11 years since I started doing it. I originally had to make a daily pickup of cassette tapes and then return printed out hard copies. Now I don't do any of that. I just sign in online for my assigned shift and do what work is available to me. I don't even work for the doctor's office anymore. I work for a medical transcription company (MedQuist) and it's a lot better for me. Now I have benefits and all the other good stuff that come along with being an employee instead of contract labor. The pay is production based, but a good transcriptionist can make anywhere from $10 to $20 an hour, or more if you are qualified to do specialty work.

I hope that answers some of your questions. :XD:
